Could a neck adjustment lower your blood pressure?

Posted on 2010-02-25 11:53:50

Though doctors are unsure of what causes blood pressure to increase, a new study suggests that a specific type of neck adjustment may reduce hypertension for some of the 65 million Americans battling it.

The University of Chicago study, published in the Journal of Human Hypertension this month, looked at the possibility of a connection between a spinal realignment and a decrease in blood pressure.

"We set up a double-blind study to really look and see if in fact this procedure was affecting high blood pressure," said University of Chicago Medical Center hypertension specialist George Bakris.

The results were intriguing. The patients who received the chiropractic adjustments saw their blood pressure drop an average of 17 points -- a dip that usually takes two blood pressure medications to achieve.

"My blood pressure dropped tremendously," said Denise Nieman, who had neck pain before participating in the study.

Why It May Work

The idea behind the realignment is that the C-1 vertebra, located at the top of the spine, operates like a fuse box in the body. When it's twisted, it can pinch arteries and nerves at the neck's base, which not only causes discomfort but also affects blood flow.

When the spine is misaligned, it can affect all types of things, all types of disease, conditions," said chiropractor Marshall Dickholtz Jr.

So for patients like Nieman, whose X-rays showed her C-1 out of alignment, the special chiropractic adjustment lowered the pain and her blood pressure simultaneously.

The Miracle Vitamin

Posted on 2009-03-18 12:56:02

For years I have talked to my patients about the importance of good nutrition and how vitamin supplements are necessary to get the nutrition that we need.  Do you know the importance of vitamin D in your diet? Vitamin D is most widely known for its importance in building strong bones; our bodies need vitamin D to help us with calcium absorption.  What you may not know is that vitamin D may prevent cancer, protect against heart disease and ward off a long list of disorders such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes and gum disease.

New evidence shows that getting enough vitamin D may be the most important thing you can do for your health. I want you to know that I am truly concerned about your health and your nutrition; if you are not sure that you are doing everything you can to live a healthy and pain free life then we need to talk. At your next visit let's talk about all of your nutrition concerns and make a plan to send you down the road to a healthier you.

Here is a link to a great article on the importance of vitamin D in your diet:

Why you need Omega 3 Fatty Acids

Posted on 2009-01-20 12:38:46

Why you need Omega 3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are known as essential fatty acids (EFAs), which the body cannot make but they are absolutely necessary for normal development and growth. These fatty acids were initially developed as "Vitamin F", until the researchers realized that they must be classified with the group called fats.  Scientific evidence shows that omega-3-fatty acids can reduce the risk of sudden cardiac death. Why is this so?
When the electrical impulses that control heart rhythm become rapid or chaotic the heart may suddenly stop (arrest). Death normally follows quickly in the absence of immediate emergency care. What researchers have found is that Omega 3 fatty acids may help prevent this sudden cardiac arrest by controlling the electric impulses that regulate heartbeat.

Scientists also believe that omega-3 fatty acids can improve one's blood lipid (cholesterol and triglyceride) levels and decrease the risk of coronary heart disease. Because omega-3 fats reduce inflammation, they help to prevent inflammatory diseases like heart disease and arthritis. In addition to warding off inflammation, omega-3’s are also essential to the brain, impacting behavior and cognitive function, and are especially necessary during fetal development.

It is now known that Omega 3 actually plays a large role in the development and growth of your baby when it is in your uterus. After all, your baby relies on you for the vitamins, nutrients, and calories he needs throughout his development. Omega 3 foods can provide your baby with the energy and materials necessary to good physical and mental growth.

Having an Omega 3 deficiency while you are pregnant can prove very harmful to you and your baby. Your baby takes Omega 3 from the foods that you eat. The nutrients cross the placenta, helping your baby to grow and develop. However, if your baby does not get enough Omega-3 from the food you eat, he will begin to take it from your own stores. Researchers believe that these stores may be located in the brain, which can result in a loss of up to 3% of your brain cells.
